is cutting his holiday vacation short, returning to washington tomorrow to continue talks to try to avoid that automatic tax hike and spending cut combination. that's the same day that congress returns to town. before the president left town on friday, he suggested a stopgap measure to freeze tax rates for people making less than $250,000 a year and extend unemployment benefits. reports say white house staffers have been quietly working with senate democrats to come up with a plan to avoid the fiscal cliff, but little progress has been made. >>> a chinese ratings agency is putting the u.s. on negative watch citing troubles with long-term debt issues. on a statement on its web site, global credit says each political party insists on the proposition favorable for its own interest. it expects u.s. debt to rise to 105% of gdp this year and warns the country will probably fall into recession in 2013 if there's no resolution to the fiscal cliff. last year, it cut u.s. treasuries from a to a-plus with a negative outlook. >>> and the holiday shopping season is drying to a close. early numbers sug

, congress left the capital with no deal in sight. jon karl is in washington. they needed to get it done before new year's to see this thing get done. has the time to have that happen already passed? >> well, it's getting -- there's not much hope out there. i gotta tell you. just over a week left, josh. and the speakerf the house and the president did not even speak over the weekend. the last time they had a conversation was a brief phone conversation on friday. no signs of progress on anything since then. there wasn't much before, as you know. now the white house is looking at a fallback plan. just a stop-gap bill they're hoping congress would do that would delay the tax increases on people making over $250,000 from going into effect. it would extend unemployment benefits and delay spending cuts going into effect on january 1st. even accomplishing that will be difficult. congress comes back two days after christmas. that gives them four dice come to an agreement and pass something. not an easy task. >> so we know what it means for the average men. what happens in washington if we go ove

gorani here in washington, d.c. in for brooke baldwin. grief today is shattering the christmas eve quiet on a sleepy town in new york. this is how it looked around 6:00 in the morning today. there was a massive house fire that ravaged homes overlooking lake ontario. the house fire spread as firefighters tried to dodge gunfire. the firefighters apparently walked into a trap just as they were responding to this. at last word, two firefighters are dead, three other first responders are wounded, and alleged gunman is dead. authorities can't say whether other bodies might be found in the eight homes destroyed or damaged by the fire in the town of webster. shocking, bizarre, tragic today. cnn's poppy harlow is in new york, trying to piece together this horrible chain of events here on christmas eve. so what happened, because authorities are saying potentially this was a trap laid out for the firefighters. >> that's what the police chief gerald pickering said in the last press conference, we're awaiting right now another press conference that should start any minute. but he did say that it appe

an hour, it's the winds. whether we see winds in washington or new york already slowing down travel tonight, they won't see the snow accumulation. it's the winds with this system that's a big deal. indy gusts to almost 40 miles per hour. roanoke, virginia to dchicago. we're talking a big geography in terms of the impacts of it. here's where the blizzard warnings are in. that's for 6 to 12 inches of snow coupled with winds at 40, 50 miles per hour making it difficult to see and visibility is down near zero. that's kind of the blizzard warning scenario. there's the blizzard warning. you can see that in areas of indiana and illinois and moving into ohio. these in the pink are winter weather warnings, so we'll see that. here's the snow. 12 inches at the very least, and in upstate new york, suzanne, we will see at least 12 inches of snow. so the timing in and around western new york, we see the snow tonight to tomorrow. i know you travel a lot, and it's those big cities in and around new york and new jersey and washington, big-time travel delays at the airports. already canceling hundred

, and you do, too, because we've seen it repeated because this gridlock in washington, you know, sort of elicits a national eye roll. but we should point out that the issues they're fighting over are the fundamental dividing lines between the two parties. and the reason it has been so hard for them to reach any kind of agreement is because they're arguing about the role of government, bigger or smaller. tax cuts, yes, or more of a social safety net for people? those are the basic foundational issues that define democrats versus republicans. and so while both sides have tried to make noises toward reaching a deal, they fundamentally break down over these divide over ideas. and so these are big issues. they're arguing about right now, suzanne. >> all right. jess, give us an update, if there's any progress from that afternoon meeting. we know they'll at least be sitting in the same place. maybe they'll come up with something. thanks. >>> some u.s. companies are now seeing a big jump in exports to china, of all places. this is part of a growing demand of products made in america. our magg
